We at the British Columbia First Nations Justice Council are grateful to welcome you into this online, immersive educational experience. Here, we will be guiding you through an overview of the historical and modern-day experiences and contexts surrounding Indigenous People’s experiences across British Columbia.
We want to acknowledge the courage it takes to do a training that challenges ideas and norms that we all hold. While this course will not be everything for everyone, it is an important step in addressing harm and bringing about transformative change throughout the criminal justice system.
This course, deeply informed by the work of Kory Wilson, was developed in partnership by members of the British Columbia First Nations Justice Council, Surrey Police Service, and Canadian Police Knowledge Network consultants in cooperation with Indigenous public service employees, local Indigenous communities, and Elders. It is a collaborative effort to deliver this material, brought on by the urgency of the over-representation of Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s criminal justice system.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Recall foundational language related to Indigenous Peoples.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of Indigenous worldviews.
- Reflect upon the overrepresentation of Indigenous Peoples in the criminal justice system, and the link between colonialization and incarceration.
- Identify the impact of colonialism and systemic discrimination on one’s own life as well as on Indigenous Peoples over time.
- Identify practices and skills to assist in developing positive relationships with Indigenous persons and communities.
