Reconciliation and indigenization are important words and concepts for everyone to understand. Together these modules will provide you with foundational knowledge of Canadian Indigenous peoples in the hopes that the true history and contemporary reality of Indigenous people is known. In addition, as a peace officer interacting and working together with the Indigenous community on different levels, the content in these modules can provide knowledge and context for different situations.
The Indigenous Awareness 101: Promoting Culturally Safe Practices eLearning course is divided into four modules. The Introduction Module provides an overview of different legal frameworks designed to improve the relationships of state agencies, including the police, with Indigenous peoples. Module 2: Colonization explores the histories, cultures and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, historical and present. Module 3: The Impact of Colonization will aim to expand your knowledge of the impact of colonization on Indigenous people. Module 4: Decolonization, Cultural Humility and Allyship aims to provide strategies on how to better engage with Indigenous peoples and move forward in a more equitable, reconciliatory manner.
