An Introduction to Privately Manufactured Firearms

The An Introduction to Privately Manufactured Firearms course provides learners with the tools to identify and respond to privately manufactured firearms (PMFs), including three-dimensionally (3D) printed and assembled weapons. Learners will be able to recognize PMFs, handle related evidence, and consider the legal implications of firearms made outside traditional regulations. The course emphasizes the detection of firearms that may appear unconventional to address emerging threats to public safety and illegal firearm trafficking.

• Develop an awareness of the legal authorities regarding firearms.
• Differentiate between a privately manufactured firearm and a commercially manufactured firearm.
• Recognize the different techniques in manufacturing a private firearm.
• Develop an awareness of how 3D printing technology is used to privately manufacture firearms.
• List various privately manufactured firearm components.
• Discuss the steps involved in assembling a privately manufactured firearm.
• Discuss the officer’s legal authorities related to prohibited and privately manufactured firearms as per the Criminal Code (1985).
• Discuss the officer’s legal authorities related to search and seizure of privately manufactured firearms as per the Criminal Code (1985).
• List the items that officers may encounter indicating the production of a firearm.
• Outline the seizure procedure of a privately manufactured firearm.
