Airport Policing

Airports are complex environments where policing roles and responsibilities have significantly evolved over the past 40 years. As critical infrastructure for the ongoing health of the economy, they represent potential targets for serious crime and terrorism. As such, airport policing and security is a specialist field requiring dedicated and trained officers, integrated systems, appropriate technology, and effective partnerships between various governmental, private, and public sector agencies.

The Airport Policing course will support police officers assigned at Canada’s Class 1 airports in enforcing, monitoring, and applying airport security measures in accordance with approved programmes, and to communicate and cooperate with other airport agencies.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

• Recognize the history of airport policing
• List past threats that occurred related to aviation policing
• Name the different partners in Canada’s National Civil Aviation Security System
• Describe the roles of different partners
• Explain the role of airport policing in relation to the different partners
• List the acts under which policing is performed in an airport
• Describe the regulation sections applicable to airport policing
• Name the top offences that occur in airports
• Explain four types of investigation that can occur in the context of an airport
• Explain the context of international travel on airport security
• Determine, in a given situation, which security agencies/organizations, whether domestic or international, the officer could share the collected incident information with from their report
• Determine, in a given situation, which security agencies/organizations, whether domestic or international, the officer could contact to collect complementary information for their report
• Describe the process of obtaining information from security agencies/organizations, whether domestic or international
