Also offered in the Interview & Interrogation Series:
There is little doubt that evidence obtained from witnesses is critical to the successful resolution of criminal investigations. The Cognitive Interview procedure, which applies memory-enhancing techniques and generates greater amounts of reliable and accurate details from witnesses, is widely accepted in policing practice.
Interviewing Victims and Witnesses - Memory Enhancing Techniques is the second course in the four part Interview & Interrogation Series. It explores the cognitive interview approach and reviews the processes and methods for facilitating a memory-enhancing interview. Using videos and other treatments, this course will teach techniques such as building rapport, context reinstatement, note taking, and reverse order recall to maximize outcomes when interviewing victims and witnesses.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Explain the purpose a 'cognitive interview' and how memory is processed
- Describe the factors that affect memory processing
- Describe how to lay out the interview room
- Explain the sequence of steps involved in facilitating a memory enhancing interview
It is recommended that learners successfully complete Interviewing Victims and Witnesses - Part I before taking this course.
This course is designed for senior constables or newly promoted ranks moving into investigative units that require more than just a basic understanding of interviewing and interrogation.
The content for this course was developed by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General in collaboration with Edmonton Police Service and other agencies.
