Victim Rights in Canada

Victim Rights in Canada

Specifically designed for Canadian Police and other appropriate public safety personnel, the Victim Rights in Canada course will educate frontline officers about the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights and will inform on the rights of victims of crime while an offence is being investigated. It will also provide information on how frontline officers can support victims of crime.

As the demands upon frontline police and public safety personnel grow and become increasingly complex, it is more important than ever to communicate information in a clear, concise, and consistent manner. In the case of the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights, it is critical for all frontline officers to understand the key elements of the Act. This will not only ensure that victims' rights are protected at every level of the criminal justice system, but also to mitigate risk against inadvertent oversight by officers of those rights.

Learning Objectives

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Explain at a high level the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights.
  • Identify what frontline officers need to communicate to victims about their rights.
  • State what frontline officers need to know when working with victims who believe their rights have been denied by a federal department or agency.
  • Course Evaluation

As part of a requirement to complete this course, you will have to complete two surveys. Participation in this research initiative will help us to demonstrate that eLearning is an effective way to administer learning that can save classroom time, and be an interactive and rewarding experience. The pre-learning survey will assess your prior knowledge about the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights and the frontline officer's role in educating victims. The post-learning survey will ask many of the same questions after you take the course and will demonstrate the effectiveness of the learning. There will be a follow-up survey three months after the learning. This short survey will assess how much knowledge you retained from the training.

Each survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

You will be asked to provide your name in each survey. We appreciate you letting us know who you are, and want to ensure you that we will only be using your information for research purposes and follow-up if consent is provided.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this initiative.

All components of this course will need to be completed in order to achieve successful completion and a certificate.
